JLPT N5 Grammar: は vs が Explained in Bengali

🎯 JLPT N5 Essential

Let me tell you about the day I almost quit Japanese. It was March 2019. I had just learned Hiragana and Katakana, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. Then I opened my first grammar book and saw these two sentences:

わたし学生です。
আমি একজন ছাত্র। (I am a student.)
わたし学生です。
আমিই একজন ছাত্র। (It is I who am a student.)

My brain froze. Both sentences use the same words. Both say something about being a student. But one uses は and one uses が. And the meaning is completely different. I stared at those two sentences for an hour, convinced that Japanese grammar was designed to torture foreigners.

Fast forward to today: I've taught this concept to over 2,000 Bengali students through NihonSync, and I can explain は vs が in a way that actually makes sense. Not the confusing textbook way — the "Biki Sensei broke it down over chai" way.

The Core Difference: Topic vs. Subject

Here's the simplest explanation I can give you. Think of a conversation like a stage play.

は (wa) is like the spotlight. It says, "Hey, we're talking about THIS now." It introduces the topic of the conversation. When I say わたしは学生です, I'm shining the spotlight on "me" and saying something about me. The topic is me.

が (ga) is like pointing at someone in a crowd. It says, "THIS person is the one who does the action." It identifies the subject — the doer of the action or the one with the property. When I say わたしが学生です, I'm pointing at myself in a group and saying, "I'm the one who is a student."

In Bengali, we don't have this exact distinction, which is why it feels so foreign. We just say "আমি" (ami/I) and context does the rest. Japanese is more precise — it forces you to think about what you're talking about versus who is doing what.

Biki's Memory Trick: は is like saying "Speaking of [X]..." while が is like saying "[X] is the one that..." If you can translate your Japanese sentence starting with "Speaking of..." then you need は.

は (wa): The Topic Marker — Explained in Bengali

Let's break this down with real examples that I use in my NihonSync lessons.

When you use は, you're setting the topic. Think of it like changing the channel on a TV. You're telling the listener, "We're now on the 'Me' channel" or "We're now on the 'Japan' channel."

JapaneseBengali MeaningEnglishWhy は?
にほんあついです。জাপানের কথা বলতে গেলে, এটি গরম।Speaking of Japan, it is hot.Topic = Japan
さかなすきです。মাছের ব্যাপারে বলতে, আমি এটি পছন্দ করি।Speaking of fish, I like it.Topic = fish
きょうあめです。আজকের কথা বলতে, বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে।Speaking of today, it is rainy.Topic = today
にほんごむずかしいです。জাপানি ভাষার কথা বলতে, এটি কঠিন।Speaking of Japanese, it is difficult.Topic = Japanese language

Notice something? In every sentence with は, you can mentally add "Speaking of..." before the topic. That's your test. If "Speaking of X" makes sense, use は.

Here's a personal example from my life. When I first visited a Japanese restaurant in Dhaka with my family, my mother asked me to order. I said:

すしおいしいです。
সুশির কথা বলতে, এটি সুস্বাদু। (Speaking of sushi, it is delicious.)

I wasn't saying sushi is the only delicious thing. I was setting sushi as the topic and commenting on it. My brother then replied:

てんぷらおいしいです。
টেম্পুরাও সুস্বাদু। (Tempura is also delicious.)

He used も (mo/also) because I had established "delicious food" as the topic area. This is how は creates conversation flow — it sets the stage for what comes next.

が (ga): The Subject Marker — Explained in Bengali

Now let's talk about が. This one is trickier because in English and Bengali, we don't mark subjects differently from topics. But Japanese does, and it's crucial for JLPT N5.

Use が when:

1. You're answering a question that asks "Who?" or "What?"
2. You're introducing new information
3. You're emphasizing the subject over others
4. The sentence has an adjective describing a subjective feeling

JapaneseBengali MeaningEnglishWhy が?
だれ学生ですか。কে ছাত্র?Who is the student?Question word + が
わたし学生です。আমিই ছাত্র।I am the student. (emphasis)Emphasis/identification
あめすきです。আমি বৃষ্টি পছন্দ করি।I like rain.Subjective feeling
にほんごはなせます。আমি জাপানি বলতে পারি।I can speak Japanese.Ability (potential form)

Look at the first example. If someone asks "Who is the student?" (だれが学生ですか), you MUST answer with が: わたしが学生です. If you say わたしは学生です, it sounds like you're changing the topic randomly — like someone asked "Who broke the window?" and you replied "Speaking of me, I'm a student." Grammatically possible, but weird.

The "Exhaustive Listing" vs. "Contrastive" Distinction

This is where textbooks usually lose students. Let me explain it in plain Bengali.

が with exhaustive listing: When you use が in a sentence like わたしが学生です, you're doing "exhaustive listing" — you're saying "Among all the people we're considering, I and ONLY I am the student." It's like pointing at one person in a lineup.

は with contrast: When you use は in わたしは学生です, you might be implying a contrast. "I'm a student (but others might not be)." Or "Speaking of me, I'm a student (but speaking of my job, I'm also a waiter)."

Here's a real conversation I practiced with my Japanese language exchange partner in 2020:

A: だれにほんごをべんきょうしていますか。
কে জাপানি ভাষা শিখছে? (Who is studying Japanese?)
B: ビキべんきょうしています。
বিকিই শিখছে। (Biki is the one studying.)
A: ビキさんまいにちべんきょうしますか。
বিকির কথা বলতে, সে কি প্রতিদিন পড়াশোনা করে? (Speaking of Biki, does he study every day?)
B: はい、ビキまいにちべんきょうします。
হ্যাঁ, বিকি প্রতিদিন পড়াশোনা করে। (Yes, Biki studies every day.)

Notice how the first answer uses が because we're identifying who studies. But once Biki is established as the topic, the next sentences use は because we're now talking about Biki, not identifying him.

Common Mistakes My NihonSync Users Make

I've collected data from thousands of quiz attempts in NihonSync. Here are the top mistakes:

Mistake 1: Using は after question words
Wrong: だれいきますか。
Right: だれいきますか。
Why: Question words (だれ, なに, どこ, いつ) almost always take が because you're asking for identification, not setting a topic.

Mistake 2: Using が for general statements
Wrong: にほんあついです (as a general statement)
Right: にほんあついです
Why: When making a general comment about something known, use は. Use が only if you're saying "Japan (and not other countries) is hot."

Mistake 3: Mixing them in existential sentences
There is a cat: ねこいます (not は)
The cat is cute: ねこかわいいです
Why: Existence uses が. Description of the existing thing uses は.

The Bengali Context: Why This Is Hard For Us

I need to address this because I struggled with it personally. In Bengali, we use context and intonation to show emphasis and topic. We don't have separate particles. When a Bengali speaker first encounters は and が, their brain says, "Why do you need two words for what we do with tone?"

Here's my advice: Stop trying to map Bengali grammar onto Japanese. They're different languages with different logic. Japanese is a topic-prominent language — the topic is grammatically marked. Bengali is a subject-prominent language — the subject is assumed. Accept that Japanese does things differently, and learn the rules as new rules, not as translations of Bengali concepts.

When I finally accepted this mental shift, everything became easier. I stopped asking "How do I say this in Bengali?" and started asking "What does Japanese grammar require here?"

My Study Method: How I Finally Mastered This

I didn't master は vs が from textbooks. I mastered it from shadowing — listening to Japanese podcasts and repeating exactly what I heard. After about 200 hours of shadowing, my brain started "feeling" which particle sounded right. It became intuitive.

For JLPT N5, you don't need 200 hours. You need:

1. Read this guide twice
2. Do the NihonSync grammar quizzes (Lessons 3, 5, and 8 cover this extensively)
3. Write 20 sentences using は and 20 using が
4. Have a Bengali-speaking study buddy check them
5. Watch Japanese Ammo with Misa's YouTube video on this topic (she explains it beautifully)

Final Thoughts

は and が confused me for months. I used to message my Japanese teacher at 1 AM with "Why は here?!?" questions. She was patient. I'm paying that patience forward through this blog and through NihonSync.

The truth is, even advanced learners sometimes debate は vs が. Native Japanese speakers use them instinctively, but when asked to explain the rules, they often say "it just feels right." Your goal for JLPT N5 isn't perfection — it's passing the exam. And the exam follows predictable patterns.

は for topics. が for subjects, questions, emphasis, and new information. Write that on a sticky note and put it on your mirror.

がんばって!
